Jazz Saxophonists Greg Osby and Steve Wilson to perform at Village Vanguard

By DESIREE QUINONES-TERRENCE

NEW YORK – Village Vanguard, the legendary jazz club located on Seventh Avenue South in Greenwich Village, will feature two saxophonists of particular interest. March 16 to 21, the trio of altoist Greg Osby, drummer Paul Motian and pianist Jason Moran will take the stage. The following week, March 23 to 28, the New York audience will have a real treat with Steve Wilson's quartet, featuring Orrin Evans on piano, Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Bill Stewart on drums.

Greg Osby has received much attention on drummer Terry Clarke's recent album It's About Time (Blue Music Group) which was recently nominated for the Canadian JUNO Award as the Traditional Jazz Album Of The Year. It's About Time has also been raved by the Down Beat Magazine and All About Jazz.

Steve Wilson has been called a "triple threat" and "supersonic" on his alto and soprano saxophones and flute. He is featured on the new Northern Sunrise CD (Blue Music Group). All About Jazz writes "The excellent altoist Steve Wilson and guitarist Ben Monder are understated at times, though their talent shines through every chance they get... penetrating and evocative touch that has a chant-like intensity to it, particularly on tunes like the title track."

Village Vanguard is no new kid on the block. Max Gordon, a Lithuanian immigrant who grew up in Portland, Oregon, opened the joint in 1935 as a variety venue. It presented comedy, poetry and dinner before turning to a fully dedicated jazz venue. The "Vanguard" has endured all tides as a premier jazz club. It has presented virtually every significant jazz historical figure, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans, Wynton Marsalis, Keith Jarrett, Esperanza Spalding and Fernando Huergo, to mention a few. The club is also a popular location for live recordings. After 75 years, the Village Vanguard is still the mecca of swing.
